Ethel Evans

American, 1866 - 1929


Ethel Evans was born in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa in 1866. Evans began exhibiting with the Western Art Association in Omaha, Nebraska and the Art Club in Lincoln, Nebraska. From 1892-1895, she was the Omaha Public School Supervisor of Drawing, but took a leave of absence in 1895 to study at the Art Students League in New York and the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (Moore College of Art). She studied with the Adademie Delecluse in Paris and she exhibited at the Paris Salon and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1897. Evans returned to Omaha from 1897-1903, where she was an art instructor at an Omaha high school. In 1903, she accepted a similar position in a New York high school. Evans nearly died when a gas explosion occurred beneath a street car that she was riding in; Evans was hospitalized with serious injuries. The artist traveled extensively throughout Europe, Cuba and Puerto Rico from 1917-1928. Evans died in New York City in 1929.
