Leopold Survage

French, 1879 - 1968


Leopold Survage was born in Moscow in 1879. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He moved to Paris in 1908 to study with Matisse. In 1919, Survage was one of the original founders of the Setion d’Or with Albert Gleize and Georges Barque. Survage was part of the 1929 show “Painting in Paris” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His artwork can be found in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée National d'Art Moderne Georges Pompidou, Paris and the National Museum of Arts, Moscow, among others. Survage was awarded France’s Legion d’Honneur in 1963. He died in 1968.
