Julio de Diego

American, 1900 - 1979


Julio de Diego was born in Madrid, Spain in 1900. At the age of 24, De Diego came to the United States. He is best known for his Surrealist works and those that depict the Spanish civil war. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. de Diego was once married to Gypsy Rose Lee. He died in San Jose, California in 1979.
