Emanuel Gerald Viviano

American, 1907 - 1980


Born in 1907, Emmanuel Viviano studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was a Modern sculptor active with the WPA in Chicago, and from 1935 to 1941 frequently exhibited at the Annual Exhibitions of the Art Institute. His artwork was represented at the Katherine Kuh Galleries in Chicago and were featured at the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York and the San Francisco Golden Gate International Exhibition. He lived in both Chicago and Westport, CT and was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists and the Woodstock Art Association. For a time, he lived at the Byrdcliff Arts & Crafts colony in Woodstock, NY. In Chicago, Viviano often worked with the noted Chicago architect Edgar Miller, and compled sculpture for interior alcoves and garden spaces in Miller’s unique buildings. Viviano is best known for for his serene sculptures incorporating birds and wildlife. His sculptures can be found at Brookfield Zoo in Brookfield, IL, the University of Illinois Medical School, Chicago, IL and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
