William Crowder

American, 1882 - 1961


William Crowder was born in Dyersville, Iowa in 1882. He grew up in Maywood, Illinois, then moved to New York around 1920. A dedicated marine biologist, Crowder worked as a writer and illustrator for The National Geographic, often illustrating his own articles on marine life. His daughter, Esther, went on to become an artist under her father’s tutelage. Crowder died in 1961 at the age of 79.
