Richard Crist

American, 1909 - 1985


Richard Crist was born in Cleveland, OH in 1909. He studied at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA and at the Art Institute of Chicago. In the 1930s, he was part of the WPA Easel Division in Pittsburgh, PA and completed a school mural. Crist traveled to Mexico where he studied with David Siqueiros and also met Diego Rivera. Crist won a number of awards with Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and also exhibited with the Butler Institute, Youngstown, OH, the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, OH, the Museum of Non-Objective Art (Guggenheim), New York, NY and the Whitney Museum, New York, NY. His work can be found in the collections of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA and the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh, PA. Crist and his wife also wrote and illustrated a series of children’s books. In 1960, he moved to the Woodstock Art Colony in Woodstock, NY and died there in 1985 at the age of 76.
